Look to the Hills

Psalms 121:1-2 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.

Context: Psalm 121:3 He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber.

From the lexicon: Whence=from where.   Lift=raise

In other words: Psalms 121:1-2 (The psalmist speaks): I look around me to the hills and consider where my help comes from and remember it comes from the LORD Who made heaven and earth.

The psalmist looks around and sees the majesty of the hills and mountains and considers the might and power they suggest, but remembers his help does not come from such things. His help comes from God. Most likely the psalmist was in need of God’s intervention as he wrote these things. But instead of giving in to despair, he turns to God who never sleeps but is always attentive to the needs of his children and will guard the steps of those who look to Him (v.3).

Despite the news of our day, God is not sleeping nor is He dead. Man can make many marvelous things and even reach the moon, but he can never rival the creation of our universe. The God Who formed our mountains and hill still reaches out to all people who will receive Him. He protects and provides if we look to Him.

Lord, I pray for grace to keep my eyes upon You, remembering Your promise to never leave nor forsake me no matter what the circumstances may be.
