Living In Unity

Psalm 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

Context: Psalm 133:2 It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! Psalm 133:3 It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.

From the lexicon: Behold=consider this truth.   Good=agreeable     Pleasant=delightful.     Dwell=remain. Unity=unitedness.

Pulling it together: Psalm 133:1 Starts out calling us to consider this fact: how good-pleasant-and agreeable it is that brethren remain united or in one accord. The psalmist relates this to the sanctifying oil poured upon Aaron and the life-giving dew on the mountains and concludes that it is the Lord who brings blessing and life from this unity.

2 Corinthians 13:11 echoes the thought: Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. Believers in Christ ought to be as one in word and deed, supporting one another, serving one another. God’s presence and blessings follow as we do so. We are called to live holy, sanctified lives that are separated unto God’s service. Just as the psalmist compared unity to the oil of sanctification so our unity displays our separation unto God as we live according to the new life He gives us.

Lord, I pray for grace to be at one with those believers you have put around me and as such be a testimony to a lost world that cannot understand the love you give us for one another.
