Hard Hearts

Romans 2:5-6 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

Context: Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 2:1 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

From the lexicon: Hardness=hard from being dry.   Impenitent=admitting no change of mind.

In other words: Romans 2:5-6: You, with dry-hardened hearts, store up for yourselves judgment that will be meted out on the day of judgment when God reveals all and gives back to each according to what he has done in life.

Dry-hardened hearts are those that ignore God. They give Him no honor, nor do they praise Him. They ignore those things that reveal Who He is-the order of His Creation and the Truth of His Word, and thus they become dry and hardened in their hearts. Only the water of God’s Word can change this. When received, hard hearts become softened, and the seed of the Gospel can take root. The one lost in sin understands his lostness and receives Jesus as Savior and no longer will be judged by his deeds but receive the righteousness of Christ.

But there is a warning here to we who are believers in Christ, that we not become hardened as well, from neglecting that same water of the Word. Without daily looking to it we too will become dry and revert to the deeds of the flesh.

Lord, I pray for grace to remember to read your Word daily, and to meditate on it so that I might not sin against You. I pray that Your Word will bring refreshment to my soul.
