1 Corinthians 13:2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
Context: 1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 1 Corinthians 3-7 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
From the lexicon: Prophecy=prophetic utterance.know=perceive. Mysteries=secret doctrine. Knowledge=wisdom. Love=divine preference, cherishing.
In other words: 1 Corinthians 13:2: If I possess the divine gift of prophecy, i.e., am able to speak God’s message, but don’t have the capacity to love as God loves, to cherish as He does, and to prefer others over myself, then I accomplish nothing.
Pulling it Together: What can one add to this verse or section of Scripture? John 3:16 shows us that God is all about love. He gave His Son for us. 1 John 4:20 If a man says he loves God and hates his brother, he is a liar… Love is the driving force behind Calvary.
But love is not just in the outward things we do. We cannot act in pride and say we have love. We cannot insist upon having things our own way. We cannot rejoice in the misfortune of others (1 Corinthians 13:3-7). Love must come from the heart-a changed heart as we yield to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Lord I Pray for grace to love you more and to show Your love to others.
