Proverbs 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility.
Context: Proverbs 15:31-32 The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise. 32Whoever ignores instruction despises himself, but he who listens to reproof gains intelligence.
From the lexicon: Fear=reverence, piety. Instruction=discipline, chastening, correction. Wisdom=shrewdness. Honor=abundance, glory. Humility=gentleness, meekness
Pulling it together: The context of Proverbs 15:33 is instruction on the value of wisdom, having shrewdness that uses wisdom that brings us closer to God. It is the opposite of pride that leaves us unteachable. The shrewdness of wisdom responds to correction and thus avoids the pitfalls that come from continuing down false paths. Verse 31 in this chapter explains that listening to reproof is life-giving where ignoring instruction (verse 32) is a form of self-abuse.
Throughout Scripture pride is denounced as it ought to be. It is the root of all sin. Lucifer was lifted up in his pride and rebelled against God. He brought this to Adam and Eve when he tempted them in the Garden of Eden offering them that they could be as God. Ever since man has been rebelling against the Godhood of our heavenly Father.
But God offers reconciliation on His terms—that we trust in the work done on the Cross. But even when we receive this gift we are not perfect. We often need correction, which no one wants. Wisdom is heeding the voice of God in our lives and responding to it.
Lord I pray for grace to be teachable so that I hear Thy word and do it, listening to the correction it brings.
