Psalm 71:8 My mouth is full of praise and honor to you all day long.
Context: Psalm 71:6 Upon you I have leaned from before my birth; you are he who took me from my mother’s womb. My praise is continually of you. Psalm 71:9 Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent.
From the lexicon: Praise=adoration. Honor=glory.
Pulling it together: The Psalms so often remind us to be thankful and to glorify God which is in stark contrast to the rebellion described in Romans 1:21: and when they knew God they glorified Him not, neither were they thankful.
God created us to have a relationship with Him. To not have this leaves us with an emptiness that cannot be filled. While men attempt to do so with sensual pleasure, possessions, drugs, alcohol and countless other things, their efforts prove futile. Nothing satisfies. But the Psalmist reminds us God fills the void. My mouth is full of praise-adoration, our verse says. In other words, the writer is proclaiming I will concentrate on the goodness of God, praising Him for what He is and what He has done.
How much time do we spend on meaningless things. We lose sight of how wonderful God is. Our mouths become filled with complaint, when we ought to be thanking our heavenly Father, beginning with praising Him for what He did at Calvary.
And so I end with this question: What’s in your mouth?
Lord, I pray for grace to love You more and to praise You continuously.
