Do you wake up around 3 am?
I thought this was just me. I’ve been working for a long time on improving my quality and quantity of sleep, and I’m making some progress. I have a night time wind-down routine that works for me. I avoid intense TV shows or novels, caffeine or late night snacks, and in-depth discussions with my husband before bed. I have warm golden milk and a natural sleep spray that works for me on those nights when I need a little extra help. I usually fall asleep pretty easily.
But many nights I wake up in the middle of the night and have a hard time falling back to sleep.
I try not to think, or get up, or even open my eyes to check the time. The more I can’t fall back to sleep, the more frustrated I get, and the less likely sleep will return. Can you relate? What is going on?
It’s about the Industrial Age.
I did some reading on this, and it turns out that this is a common phenomenon and has something to do with the invention of electricity, the industrial age, having to get up and go to work, and alteration of our sleep patterns.
Try ‘Sleep Restriction’.
What to do when we are tossing and turning, eyes open? The authors of this article suggest we try sleep restriction – get up and read or listen to music until we feel sleepy. And try not to worry about it. It’s natural and sleep will come! See the link for the complete article. Interesting read!
So, practice good sleep hygiene, take a few deep belly breaths and try not to sweat it. Pour yourself a cup of warm milk. Read a boring book, listen to some soothing music. Sleep will come. And meanwhile, remember you are not alone…
