Deuteronomy 30:16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
Context: Deuteronomy 30:16 See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil. Deuteronomy 3:17-18 But if your heart turns away, and you will not hear, but are drawn away to worship other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today, that you shall surely perish. You shall not live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to enter and possess.
From the Lexicon: Command=lay charge. Love=honor and respect. Walk=go, proceed. Keep=watch, preserve. Commandments=terms Statutes=enactments. Judgments=act of judging a case.
Pulling it together: Moses addressed the people as they made ready to enter the land of promise. He told them they faced blessings or curses depending on whether or not they served God. It’s amazing to see in the history of Israel how little they heeded this warning to the point they became carried away by their enemies.
It is no different today. Our nation was founded on Christian principles yet bit by bit that foundation has been eroded away. Our nation is on the brink of disaster, yet our society is not only blind to it but insists on eating, drinking, and being merry, while judgment stands at the door. God’s people need to stand up. We have the words of God’s warning, and we alone are in position to sound the warning. Yet, by and large, the Church is asleep to the danger, being distracted by things that are not important. Jesus said: Seek first the kingdom of God.
Lord, I pray that Your Church will wake up to what is important and faithfully preach the Gospel that leads to salvation.
