1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
Context: 1 Timothy 6:18-19 They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, 19thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life.
From the lexicon: Charge=transmit a message. Rich=wealthy. This world=present time. Highminded=conceited. Trust=fix hope on. Uncertain=indefinite. Riches=wealth. Gives=supplies. Richly=abundantly. Enjoy=to take of.
Pulling it together: In 1 Timothy 6:17Paul admonishes young Pastor Timothy to remind those under his teaching that are rich according to the standards of this world to not feel they are above others because of their wealth, nor should they place their confidence in such fleeting things. Our confidence is rightly placed in God Who gives each what he or she has to take and to enjoy. Note that Paul is not telling those rich in goods not to enjoy what He has given, but to use wealth wisely, sharing it with those in need and thus storing up treasure in heaven.
The love of money can be a trap (1 Timothy 6:10) which we are to avoid. If we live for wealth it will destroy us. But godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6). Godliness is having God’s heart and His heart is that of love. What better way to show that love than to share what He has given us with others.
The world does not understand, nor can it. The world operates on the principle of self, but God operates on selfless love.
Lord, I pray for grace to be thankful for what You give me and to be ready to share, even to seek opportunity to share with those in need.
