Good Tidings

Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

Context: Isaiah 61:2-3 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; 3to grant to those who mourn in Zion—to give them a beautiful headdress instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the garment of praise instead of a faint spirit; that they may be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he may be glorified,

From the lexicon: Anointed=stroked with the hand. Preach=bear. Good tidings=good news.

Pulling it together: Isaiah 61:1 is quoted by Jesus in Luke 4:18 referring to His ministry. He came to declare the coming of the Lord both a day of judgment and a day of comfort. It is judgment to those who reject to call on Him and comfort to His people-those who receive Him. Therefore, Jesus came to preach the good news to the meek, i.e., those that are humble, yielding and will enter into His kingdom. The statement that he mends broken hearts reminds us that until our hearts, hardened by sin are broken we have no place with Him. He breaks the power of sin and sets us free from the prison house of our transgressions.

This verse reminds us that Jesus is returning. This world groans under the curse of sin. Nations make noise, but will fall at His coming. Sin will be judged. Each day we come closer. Just read the headlines in the news. As believers we look to our blessed hope the blessed coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Lord, I pray, for grace to preach the good news: Jesus has paid the price for our sin and He is coming. There is salvation to those who will receive Jesus as Savior and Lord.
